Throughout its history – particularly in relation to its colonial development – photography has been framed within the notions of discovery, uncovering and exposing, and of representing truth. Since the developments of contemporary photography, the subject of historical photography has begun to take charge of the camera and the politics of representation. This has meant that the notions of truth and fiction, and the possibilities of photography as "revelation", have come under scrutiny.
ldentikit is an exploration of photography's role in the representation of identity, its possibilities of revealing and concealing, of construction and instruction. The exhibition discusses, through portraiture in particular, but also through landscape, photography's engagement with identity, belonging, being, and showing, as well as how the photograph as object should be considered not simply for its subject matter, but also for its own powers of representation as a medium.
The exhibition includes new works by the Market Photo Workshop students and alumni, as well as some archival and submitted images, and was first exhibited at the Gwanza Month of Photography, August 2012, in Harare, Zimbabwe.
